Market signal

A hot PPI print and a 19-year bond-yield high push bitcoin under $77,000. Bitcoin opened Thursday at $78,291.64 (-0.2% versus Wednesday) and slid through the New York open to dip below $77,000 after August producer prices rose 0.4% on the month (5.4% year-on-year, energy-driven) came in hotter than expected; the 30-year Treasury yield touched 5.353%, its highest since June 2007, as Middle East strikes pushed WTI crude above $100 a barrel for the first time since May. Ether opened at $2,467.00 (-0.7%) and eased in sympathy. Thursday's weekly jobless claims held steady at 206,000, in line with forecasts. Bitcoin whale balances were flat at roughly 5.23m BTC over the past week, per on-chain data — large holders appear to be waiting out Friday's CPI print and the September 15–16 FOMC meeting before making a move. Spot bitcoin ETFs post a second straight outflow day as the three-week inflow streak ends. US spot bitcoin ETFs shed $120.24m net on Wednesday, September 9 — Ark 21Shares' ARKB led with $77.98m out, followed by Grayscale's GBTC (-$27.2m) and BlackRock's IBIT (-$19.53m), with Monochrome's MSBT the lone inflow at $4.5m — compounding Tuesday's $46.65m outflow for roughly $167m redeemed across the two sessions, per SoSoValue data. Spot ether ETFs moved the other way, pulling in $34.75m on the same day, led by BlackRock's ETHA, reversing Tuesday's $24.3m outflow. CoinDesk (SoSoValue data) · Tokenist

USDC adds $584m to its market cap in a week. Circle's stablecoin grew to roughly $74–77bn, about 24% of total stablecoin supply, as part of a combined $1bn weekly gain shared with Ethena's USDe and PayPal's PYUSD; total stablecoin market cap is approaching $310bn, with USDT and USDC together still accounting for about 94% of the major-stablecoin total. The industry — exchanges, miners & infrastructure

Liquid Network resumes block production, but stays in a controlled recovery mode. Blockstream's federated sidechain restarted block production on September 10, four days after the Elements software bug that let an attacker mint roughly 4,000 unbacked L-BTC and drain the federation's reserve wallet (about $320m at the time); 3,400 BTC (~85%) was returned on September 7, but the attacker still holds roughly 598.5 BTC (~$47m), and user transactions and peg operations — along with Liquid-issued USDt — remain suspended while recovery continues. Blockstream CEO Adam Back says the 1:1 L-BTC/BTC peg will be honored in full. CryptoTimes · Unchained

Coinbase retires the Base App brand, reverting to Coinbase Wallet. After roughly a year positioning Base App as a social-feed experiment, Coinbase is folding it back into the Coinbase Wallet name and refocusing the self-custodial app on trading and cross-chain access — now spanning more than ten networks including Robinhood Chain and Monad, plus perpetual futures, prediction markets and tokenized stocks. Policy & regulation

No material US or international regulatory action in the last 24 hours. The live wire stays the Clarity Act's September 15 Senate cloture vote: Republicans' 53 seats still fall short of the 60 needed, with leadership chasing Democratic votes against three unresolved disputes — ethics provisions touching President Trump's crypto income, DeFi-developer liability under Section 604, and a stablecoin-yield provision that would dent Coinbase's USDC revenue share — while the SEC's "Regulation Crypto Assets" proposal remains in its comment period. The Chatter

Vetle Lunde, K33 Research (Sep 9): argues derivatives positioning has turned defensive and thin, with perp funding near flat and CME futures premiums under 5% — a low-conviction setup he says leaves bitcoin unusually sensitive to Friday's CPI print, next Wednesday's FOMC decision and the September 15 Clarity Act cloture vote, which he reads the market as currently pricing to fail in 2026. FXStreet, via K33 Research

Ki Young Ju, CryptoQuant (X, Sep 8): argues that professional bitcoin-analyst sentiment has flipped decisively bullish — citing a monthly consensus score of +35 across 112 analysts and a short-term reading of +54 (“strong buy”) across 52 — and frames the shift itself, not a price call, as the signal worth watching. Otherwise a quiet window for standout arguments — most desks and fintwit voices were working the same PPI/yields/CPI macro read already covered above.
