Bitcoin firms up post-Fed as Zcash-led privacy coins run wild. Bitcoin climbed about 1% to the mid-$76,000s and ether traded near $2,450 in a broad, if modest, overnight bounce now that Wednesday's Fed hike is priced in. The real story was Zcash: ZEC surged 17–23% intraday to roughly $1,360–$1,390, leading a privacy-coin sector that outperformed the rest of the market by a wide margin, on the back of the NU7 governance vote (see below) and Paradigm's disclosed ZEC stake (The Chatter). The move helped drive $345m in liquidations across 86,800-plus traders in 24 hours — ether longs (~$89m) and bitcoin longs (~$85m) took the bulk, with ZEC itself (~$56m) squeezing short sellers. Spot ETFs post a second straight outflow day, though smaller than Tuesday's rout. US spot bitcoin ETFs shed $296.0m net on Wednesday, September 16, per SoSoValue data — IBIT led redemptions at $144.1m, ARKB followed at $84.4m and FBTC at $52.7m, with Morgan Stanley's MSBT the lone gainer at +$3.5m. Ether ETFs added another $224.0m in outflows, ETHA alone responsible for $110.0m, taking the combined bitcoin-plus-ether ETF outflow to roughly $520m for the day as the Fed decision kept flows risk-off. Circle's Arc mainnet goes live with BlackRock, DTCC and Visa producing blocks. Circle launched Arc's public mainnet on September 16 as a USDC-denominated, EVM-compatible Layer 1 built for institutional payments and tokenized markets, with Circle plus eleven founding validators — BlackRock, DTCC, Galaxy, Global Payments, ICE, Mastercard, MoneyGram, SBI Group, Standard Chartered, Sumitomo and Visa — running the permissioned validator set at launch; more than 100 institutional and ecosystem partners were live on day one. It's the clearest sign yet of USDC's roughly $74.5bn in circulation being wired directly into bank and market-infrastructure rails rather than just DeFi. Circle
Zcash holders vote through faster blocks and keep the halving schedule in the NU7 poll. Roughly 2.4m of the 3.6m ZEC eligible (about two-thirds of supply) voted in the coinholder poll that closed September 14, backing a cut in target block time to 25 seconds from 75 and preserving Zcash's Bitcoin-style halving curve; the vote sets scope only; activation height and code implementation are still to come. The result, alongside the Ledger hardware-wallet shielded-pool integration announced this week, underpinned Thursday's price surge. Zcash (NU7 tracker) · KuCoin
The industry — exchanges, miners & infrastructure
CleanSpark reveals Meta as the tenant behind its $6.6bn data-center lease. The bitcoin miner disclosed that a Meta subsidiary is the previously unnamed counterparty on its 20-year, 175MW infrastructure lease at its Sandersville, Georgia campus (first announced in July, worth roughly $6.6bn in contracted revenue), and separately filed to offer $2.227bn of senior secured notes due 2031 to fund the build-out. It's the largest and most explicit bitcoin-miner-to-AI-hosting pivot disclosed to date, ahead of first deliveries expected in Q4 2027. CleanSpark investor relations · CleanSpark 8-K
Policy & regulation
With CLARITY dead, the SEC and CFTC move to write crypto rules on their own authority. A day after Tuesday's failed Senate vote, SEC Chair Paul Atkins said the agency will "act decisively within [its] statutory authority," and the SEC followed through Thursday with an "innovation exemption" letting tokenized-securities venues use permissioned AMM liquidity pools to trade tokenized NMS stocks — a five-year exemption with volume and symbol limits, equivalent shareholder rights, and an opt-out for issuers who object. The same day, the CFTC's Market Participants Division issued Staff Letter 26-25, extending no-action relief from introducing-broker registration — first granted only to Phantom in March — to all passive software providers (wallets, front-ends) that meet ten conditions and don't custody assets or exercise trading discretion. Matt Huang, Paradigm co-founder (X, Sep 17): disclosed Paradigm's investment in ZEC and the Zcash Open Development Lab, framing Zcash as bitcoin's "private complement" and defending its inflation-funded developer fund as necessary insurance against AI-driven cyberattacks and quantum-computing risk to shielded transactions; he also floated blending ZEC's coin-weighted governance with other mechanisms to make the asset's monetary policy less unpredictable. Glassnode, The Week On-chain, "Breakdown into Thin Support" (Sep 16): argues bitcoin's range has failed to the downside, with price sitting about 1% under the True Market Mean near $76,700 after a rough news week, and that the real problem isn't the drawdown itself but that every demand channel — on-chain inflows, ETF flows, stablecoin growth and corporate treasury buying — has stalled simultaneously.
