Bitcoin claws back to the low $82,000s after Trump rules out striking Iran before the midterms, pulling the market off Thursday's Hormuz-driven lows. Bitcoin bottomed near $80,300–$80,500 on Thursday as Brent crude climbed toward $105 a barrel on fresh reports of tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, before recovering to around $82,500 on Friday after the White House said no strike on Iran was planned before November's elections; ether and most majors tracked the same round trip. CoinGlass-tracked liquidations over the Thursday leg ran to roughly $1.1–1.14bn in 24 hours, with ether the single largest asset at about $333m and longs bearing the bulk of the damage as leverage was flushed out. Bitcoin ETFs log a second straight outflow day, smaller than Wednesday's but still red. US spot bitcoin ETFs shed a net $244.1m on October 8 per Farside/SoSoValue data, with Fidelity's FBTC the heaviest redemption at roughly $197m while BlackRock's IBIT gave back just $5.5m; Franklin's EZBC was the sole fund with an inflow, about $4.7m. Combined with Wednesday's $487m outflow, the complex has now shed close to $730m over two sessions, erasing October's early gains. KuCoin, via Farside/SoSoValue
Ether ETFs stretch their losing streak to eight straight days. US spot ether ETFs lost about $72.5m net on October 8, per Farside, with BlackRock's ETHA responsible for roughly $71.1m of it and Grayscale's ETHE down about $6.1m; Fidelity's FETH was the lone gainer, taking in $5.5m. The slide, running since September 29, has now pulled a cumulative $641.3m out of the category, with $578.9m of that in October alone. CryptoTimes, via Farside
The industry — exchanges, miners & infrastructure
Ledger traces $86m+ in wallet drains to a single hardware reseller, not its own infrastructure. Blockchain trackers put losses above $86m across Ethereum, Tron and Bitcoin addresses tied to devices sold through Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis; Ledger has halted sales through that channel and told recent buyers not to set up their devices while it investigates a possible tampered-device supply-chain attack, saying its own systems were not breached. The episode follows a separate ~$387.5m breach of part of Bitget's wallet infrastructure less than three weeks earlier, keeping custody and hardware security firmly in focus. Bitcoin.com
Solana completes its two-month sprint to 200-millisecond blocks. The network's mainnet is set to finalize SIMD-0525's fourth and final step today, cutting slot time from 250ms to 200ms at the epoch 1053 boundary (around 15:00 UTC) and completing a staged halving from 400ms since August; faster slots shorten transaction finality and narrow the latency gap with centralized venues, a real economic input for the trading and DeFi activity that runs on the chain. Policy & regulation
New York bars former Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky for life and adds up to $35m in penalties. Attorney General Letitia James settled her 2023 civil fraud suit against Mashinsky, permanently barring him from New York's securities, commodities and crypto industries and requiring him to forfeit $10m in gains or pay the state $25m, with a further $10m due if he's released early from his 12-year federal sentence. The deal is a reminder that state enforcement against the 2022 lending-platform collapses keeps grinding on even after the federal cases closed. CoinDesk · The Block
The Chatter
A genuinely quiet window on the commentary side: between the Hormuz whiplash, the Ledger scare and the Mashinsky settlement, none of the regular research desks — Arthur Hayes, Lyn Alden, Nic Carter, Galaxy's Alex Thorn, Glassnode's Week On-chain, Ecoinometrics, CryptoQuant's Ki Young Ju, Bankless, Messari, Delphi — published a fresh, dated argument on the record that cleared the bar in this window. Checked again tomorrow rather than force it.
