Market signal

Bitcoin's round trip to $85,000 burns traders on both sides as an AI-led equity selloff drags it back to the low $80,000s. Bitcoin squeezed short sellers on its way to nearly $85,000 late Wednesday – wiping out an estimated $173m of short positions – then reversed to around $81,000–82,000 Thursday as mixed Tesla and Meta earnings revived doubts about AI capital spending, with roughly $222m of long positions liquidated on the way down; the Nasdaq fell about 2.6% on the session and the 10-year Treasury yield dipped below 5% for the first time in a month. Bitcoin's share of total crypto market value rose to about 60%, its highest since May, as altcoins sold off harder – the CoinDesk Memecoin Index fell more than 5% and its DeFi Select Index lost about 2.5%. The Fed's next rate decision lands October 27–28. CoinDesk · CoinDesk

Markets & flows — ETFs, stablecoins & on-chain

Bitcoin ETFs draw $528m as ether funds finally snap a five-day outflow streak. US spot bitcoin ETFs took in a net $528m on October 21, per SoSoValue data reported by The Block, while spot ether ETFs turned positive the same day after shedding roughly $389m over the five prior sessions (October 14–20); it's the first ether-fund inflow day in nearly two weeks. Bitcoin ETFs are still up more than $1bn for the week even as Thursday's flows wobble. The three-day haul through Wednesday tops $1bn per SoSoValue, but market strategists quoted by CoinDesk flagged that the pace is inconsistent day to day and doesn't yet look like a sustained return of demand. The industry — exchanges, miners & infrastructure

Solana activates Alpenglow, its biggest consensus overhaul since the 2020 mainnet launch. The upgrade, which validators approved with 98.27% support last September, replaces Solana's roughly 12.8-second finality window with a target of about 100–150 milliseconds; it went live on mainnet October 21 after months of community test-cluster runs. The Chatter

Joel Kruger, market strategist at LMAX Group (via CoinDesk): argues crypto's earlier outperformance has given way to closer tracking of equities as investors wait for a fresh sector catalyst, though he thinks bitcoin's relative scarcity could still help it weather the broader equity-market jitters – a read on positioning, not a price call. CoinDesk

Vikram Subburaj, CEO of Giottus exchange (via CoinDesk): cautions against chasing bitcoin's rallies, arguing ETF demand still lacks a consistent bid and that sustained – not one-off – inflows are needed before calling the recovery real. CoinDesk
