Market signal

A sharply weaker September jobs report crushes October rate-hike bets and sends gold and silver higher together. Nonfarm payrolls rose just 29,000 in September, against estimates clustered near 89,000, while the unemployment rate climbed to 4.2% and average hourly earnings grew only 0.1% on the month (3.0% year-on-year); July and August payrolls were revised down by a combined 60,000 jobs. Spot gold traded near $4,216.80/oz in U.S. dealing Friday, up roughly 1% on the session, while spot silver added about 1.4% to near $61.75, leaving the gold/silver ratio near 68.3. Treasury yields fell sharply and the dollar eased on the release; futures markets now price only around a 14% chance of an October Fed rate hike, down from roughly 70% earlier in the week, with odds now favoring the Fed holding steady this month instead. Upstream — miners, streamers & supply

Nothing new broke on the complex's open threads in this window: Gold Fields has not confirmed a revised, cash-heavier approach to Northern Star after last week's rejection, and the United Steelworkers' strike at Sibanye-Stillwater's Stillwater East mine and Columbus metallurgical complex in Montana runs on with no fresh talks reported. Both remain exactly where the last two editions left them — nothing material to add today.

Physical & official flows — central banks, ETFs & bullion

No official-sector or ETF-flow data landed in the window: the World Gold Council's next monthly central-bank purchase figures aren't due until later this month, and Shanghai/India premiums, COMEX deliveries and LBMA vault levels showed no fresh dislocation beyond what prior editions have already covered.

Silver & PGMs — the industrial complex

Platinum and palladium traded on the same yields-and-dollar move as gold today (see Market signal) rather than any new fundamentals news, and nothing fresh surfaced on silver's industrial or recycling side. The Silver Institute's deficit call and the PV sector's silver-thrifting trend, both covered in earlier editions, remain the reference points for the structural story.

The Chatter

A genuinely quiet window for fresh, attributable argument: GoldFix (Vince Lanci) and other tracked voices published on today's jobs number, but behind paywalls that leave no public argument to summarize fairly, and nothing new and freely accessible surfaced from the Alden/Gromen/Costa/Nieuwenhuijs/Incrementum/WGC/Norman roster in the last 24 hours. Better a blank section than a thin paraphrase of commentary we can't actually read.
