Market signal

Gold and silver take their sharpest one-day hit in weeks as oil's West Asia escalation flips the inflation trade against bullion. Spot gold fell to the low-$4,000s Thursday — Kitco had it near $4,033/oz, down about 2.6% on the day, while COMEX futures were quoted nearer $4,100–4,110/oz by other services — and silver fell harder, to roughly $54.50–56.50/oz (down 3.5–5.75% depending on source and timestamp), pushing the gold/silver ratio up out of its recent low-to-mid-70s range. The trigger was crude: Brent/WTI extended their climb toward the $100–112/bbl area on reports of further drone strikes on Gulf oil infrastructure, reviving the same oil-driven inflation-expectations channel that has weighed on gold all week, now compounded by the Fed's blackout ahead of its October 27–28 decision. Platinum and palladium again had no catalyst of their own. Business Standard · FXStreet · Goodreturns

Upstream — miners, streamers & supply

Newmont opens major-miner earnings season with record Q3 adjusted profit and a lower cost line. The world's largest gold producer reported Q3 2026 attributable gold production of about 1.3 million ounces, adjusted net income of $2.31 billion ($2.20/share) and $1.9 billion of free cash flow, while by-product all-in sustaining costs fell 10% quarter-on-quarter to $1,454/oz; the board held the quarterly dividend at $0.26/share and management said the company remains on track for full-year guidance with an improved cost outlook. Newmont also said a full-funds investment decision on the Red Chris block-cave expansion in British Columbia (C$4.2–4.8bn, 100% basis) is expected in early 2027, and pulled forward the Tanami Expansion 2 restart in Australia to around mid-2027 after completing shaft construction. Agnico Eagle and Kinross report Q3 next Wednesday, October 28; Barrick follows November 9. Newmont Q3 2026 release (SEC 8-K)

Physical & official flows — central banks, ETFs & bullion

No material official-sector, ETF-flow or bullion-market development cleared the bar this window beyond the WGC/BCG digital-gold study already covered here Wednesday.

Silver & PGMs — the industrial complex

No silver- or PGM-specific fundamental development cleared the bar this window — no fresh South African PGM labour or power disruption, no new recycling or industrial-hedging data. Silver's sharper fall than gold today was a trading/positioning move on the oil-driven risk-off shift, covered above, not a new industrial-demand story.

The Chatter

Another quiet window for genuinely new, freely accessible argument from the regular roster, re-checked against today's sharp move: nothing newer turned up from Gromen, Costa, Nieuwenhuijs, GoldFix, Ross Norman or the World Gold Council's own analysts. The latest still on record: Incrementum's Ronald-Peter Stöferle, arguing gold is undergoing "remonetization" as it regains a formal role in the monetary system (Kitco, Sept. 25), and Lyn Alden, holding her existing gold without adding to it on the view that further Fed hikes are fiscally self-defeating with US debt above 100% of GDP (Kitco, Sept. 29); both are now nearly a month old.
