G7 agrees to release up to 100 million barrels of diesel and crude after Trump's export-ban threat. On a videoconference hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, G7 governments agreed to release as much as 100 million barrels of diesel and crude from strategic reserves over the next four months, front-loading a "substantial" diesel tranche within the first 20 days and coordinating the release through the IEA; the deal followed weeks of US pressure on Europe to tap its own emergency stocks or face a threatened ban on US diesel exports, and arrives five weeks ahead of the US midterms. Most of the volume reuses reserves already pledged under March's 400-million-barrel coordinated release rather than adding fresh supply. NPR · Bloomberg (paywall)

Brent holds above $102 as WTI gives back most of Thursday's carrier-group spike. WTI settled Friday at $91.11/bbl, down 1.90% from Thursday's $92.87 close that followed reports of a third US carrier strike group heading to the Gulf (see yesterday's edition), while Brent eased just 0.06% to $102.25 — the G7 release capped the rally without reversing it, leaving Brent essentially flat for the week and WTI down roughly 1.4%. Baker Hughes: US rig count snaps a five-week climb, but oil rigs hit their highest since May 2025. The weekly count fell by one to 598 for the week to October 2 — the first decline in six weeks — as gas rigs dropped two to 133, their lowest since mid-September, while oil rigs rose one to 456; the total remains up 49 rigs, or 9%, year-on-year. Upstream — exploration & production

No upstream-specific news beyond the rig count above — no major, NOC or shale-independent item surfaced in the window, and OPEC+'s eight-country panel doesn't reconvene until Sunday.

Midstream — pipelines, LNG & shipping

Another Hormuz tanker struck on an outbound transit; no casualties, no stoppage. UKMTO relayed a report that a tanker exiting the Strait of Hormuz was hit by an unidentified projectile, causing a brief fire and blackout before the vessel got back underway on its own power; no injuries or environmental impact were reported, keeping the run of near-daily strikes unbroken but, so far, non-disruptive to the flow of crude tracked through the strait in recent editions. Downstream — refining, fuels & chemicals

No refining outage, startup or margin-moving development in the window beyond the diesel-reserve story above; that's where today's downstream news lives.

The Chatter

A heavy news day but a quiet one for the regular sector commentariat: after a thorough check of Doomberg, HFI Research, Commodity Context, Super-Spiked, Energy Aspects, Javier Blas and the rest, nothing distinct had surfaced on the G7 release or the Hormuz track by the time this edition closed. Worth another look once the weekend letters are out.
