Market signal

Brent and WTI grind lower for a third straight session. Brent settled Tuesday at $100.58/bbl (+0.3%) and WTI at $89.44/bbl (roughly flat), both still easing off last week's carrier-deployment spike as traders weigh the rebound in Gulf exports against the still-unbroken run of Hormuz tanker strikes. Baker Hughes: oil rigs hit a 17-month high even as the total count slips. The US rig count fell by one to 598 in the week to October 2, the lowest since mid-September, but that masks a split move: oil rigs rose one to 456, their highest since May 2025, while gas rigs fell two to 133, their lowest since mid-September. Upstream — exploration & production

Iran's oil minister resigns as the blockade squeeze bites. President Masoud Pezeshkian accepted Mohsen Paknejad's resignation Sunday after rejecting earlier requests to step down; state media cite "personal reasons," but the move lands amid 85% inflation, a sliding rial and reporting that Iran's crude held outside the US blockade zone has collapsed from roughly 100 million barrels in July to about 10 million, leaving Tehran little left to sell by Kpler's reckoning. Midstream — pipelines, LNG & shipping

Hormuz tanker strikes hit their most intense pace of the war even as exports keep recovering. UKMTO has now logged at least one projectile strike a day in or near the strait since October 2 — trackers call it the heaviest run of attacks since the conflict began — yet Gulf crude and LNG flows outside Iran are estimated near 81% of pre-war levels, with Saudi Arabia and the UAE routing more cargoes back through under US naval escort; the divergence is keeping war-risk premiums and freight costs elevated regardless of the headline recovery. Downstream — refining, fuels & chemicals

No refining outage, startup or margin-moving development surfaced in the window; distillate markets are still sitting on the structural tightness already in the price rather than reacting to anything new today.

The Chatter

A third quiet day for the regular sector commentariat: Doomberg, HFI Research, Commodity Context, Super-Spiked, Art Berman, Goehring & Rozencwajg, Energy Aspects' public notes and Javier Blas's own feed turned up nothing dated to this window on the Hormuz escalation, the Iranian minister's exit or the price drift — worth a second look once the newsletter crowd weighs in on either story.
