Market signal

A hawkish Fed and a flaring Iran conflict knock bitcoin under $77k, then buyers take it back to $80k. Renewed US–Iran tension and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish G20 remarks in Asheville — declaring the post-2008 "global savings glut" over in favour of an investment surge, and reinforcing bets on a September 15–16 rate hike rather than a cut — drove bitcoin under $77,000 over the weekend with more than $400m of leveraged positions liquidated. Buyers stepped back in near $78,000, and bitcoin opened Monday's Labor Day-thinned, ETF-market-closed session at $80,351 before easing to roughly $79,350 by mid-morning ET; ether opened at $2,514.80 and last traded near $2,498. Solana and XRP are riding bitcoin's beta, not their own story. SOL is near $105.70 (+40% on the month) and XRP near $1.41 (+39%) heading into the weekend, but most of both moves traces back to bitcoin's own rally rather than anything idiosyncratic; XRP's status is also in play at the Senate's September 15 Clarity Act cloture vote. 24/7 Wall St.

Markets & flows — ETFs, stablecoins & on-chain

US spot ETF markets were shut for Labor Day, so no new creation/redemption prints since Friday's already-reported flows; trading resumes Tuesday.

Stablecoin supply keeps grinding higher. The total stablecoin market stood at roughly $301.7bn as of September 3, with USDT near $183.3bn (about 59% share) and USDC near $73.6bn (about 23%); USDC alone added roughly $584m in a single week, part of a broader ~$1bn weekly gain across USDC, Ethena's USDe and PayPal's PYUSD, with no de-peg wobbles reported over the window. Staked ETH crosses another supply milestone. Roughly 41.7–42m ETH is now staked, above 35% of circulating supply across 1.2m-plus validators earning a base yield near 2.7%, while Fidelity has filed to add staking to its spot ether ETF (FETH) so the fund could capture network yield rather than holding a non-earning asset. Capital B makes its largest bitcoin buy in a year. The French treasury company added 376 BTC (€25.3m / $29.4m), funded by recent capital raises backed by Adam Back and TOBAM, lifting its holdings to 3,521 BTC. The Block

The industry — exchanges, miners & infrastructure

Blockstream's Liquid Network drained of $320m in bitcoin; sidechain paused. A software bug in the Elements codebase let an attacker mint counterfeit L-BTC and redeem it for roughly 4,000 of the federation's 4,200 BTC reserve via the SideSwap trading platform; the attacker, claiming white-hat intent, has returned about 3,400 BTC while keeping ~598.5 BTC (~$47m) pending a patch, and Blockstream sent a PGP-signed on-chain message confirming affected nodes are patched and it is "safe to return the funds." Bitcoin's own price barely moved on the news — markets treated it as a federated-sidechain failure, not a base-layer one — but it revives scrutiny of trust assumptions in federated bridge designs exchanges rely on for fast settlement. JPMorgan resets its miner ratings as the AI pivot widens. The bank upgraded Cipher and CleanSpark while trimming price targets on Marathon and Riot, as CleanSpark's roughly 200MW of critical-IT capacity at its newly acquired 285MW Texas site underscores the sector's continuing shift from pure hashing toward AI and HPC hosting revenue. Policy & regulation

El Salvador's bitcoin reserve becomes a weekend dispute over wording, not substance. The IMF said Thursday that all bitcoin El Salvador added to official holdings since June 2025 was funded by private donations rather than public money — unlocking a preliminary path to roughly $140m in financing under its IMF programme — but its language describing "majority ownership and operational control" changing hands was reported by a Spanish daily as a transfer of the sovereign reserve itself. President Bukele denied it over the weekend, saying only equity in the Chivo wallet business moved to a private operator and that the roughly 7,764 BTC Strategic Bitcoin Reserve remains fully under state control. The Chatter

Jim Bianco (Bianco Research, on Bankless with David Hoffman): argues Kevin Warsh has turned the Fed from a chairman-dominated institution into a genuinely deliberative 12-voter body, ending the old forward-guidance playbook — and makes the counterintuitive case that a credibly hawkish, inflation-fighting Fed could actually pull long-term yields down, cutting against crypto's reflexive "rate hikes are bearish" read of the weekend's selloff. A quiet weekend for sharper fintwit takes otherwise — Labor Day thinned both the tape and the commentary; expect more once ETF desks and the research shops are back Tuesday.
