Market signal

Bitcoin slips back under $79k as the Iran conflict flares again and Fed hike odds firm. Fresh US–Iran strikes overnight, on top of the weekend's exchanges, pushed oil back near $100 a barrel and hardened bets on a September 16 rate hike to roughly 60%; bitcoin opened Tuesday at $79,093.85 (-1.6% versus Monday) and eased toward $78,350–78,600 through the session, with ether opening at $2,489.84 (-1%) and drifting to the low-$2,470s before paring some of the loss. Three dates now stand between the range and a resolution: Thursday's jobless claims, Friday's August CPI print, and the September 15–16 FOMC meeting itself, with $81,000–82,000 the resistance a close needs to clear to reopen $85,000. Markets & flows — ETFs, stablecoins & on-chain

US spot bitcoin ETFs post a third straight positive week. The funds pulled in $986.9m of net inflows in the week ended Friday, September 5, extending the streak to $3.8bn over three weeks and lifting total net assets to roughly $101.3bn — but cumulative 2026 net flows are still about $1bn negative, underscoring how much of this year's early outflows the recent run has yet to claw back. Strategy sits out another week. Michael Saylor's Strategy filed its regular Monday disclosure showing no bitcoin bought or sold for the week of September 1–7, leaving holdings unchanged at 845,050 BTC — north of 4% of total supply — and sitting on roughly a $2.4bn unrealized gain at Tuesday's price, after resuming purchases in late August following a two-month pause. 24/7 Wall St.

Liquid Network attacker returns 85% of the haul; $47m still outstanding. Update: the self-described white-hat behind Sunday's $320m Liquid federation exploit sent back roughly 3,400 BTC (about $268m at the time) on September 7 after Blockstream patched the underlying Elements bug, but has kept roughly 598.5 BTC (~$47m) pending further talks; the sidechain remains paused while Blockstream negotiates the rest. Ethereum Foundation commits to a hard 2029 quantum deadline. The Foundation's Protocol Cluster published a unified roadmap targeting full post-quantum resistance across execution, consensus and data layers by December 2029, treating the date as non-negotiable until a January 2027 checkpoint; the plan leans on the December 2026 Glamsterdam fork and marks FOCIL and account-abstraction-enabling Frame Transactions as must-ship, with forks overlapping rather than shipping in sequence to hit the pace required. Policy & regulation

No material US or international regulatory action in the last 24 hours. The live threads are unchanged: the Clarity Act's September 15 Senate cloture vote and the SEC's "Regulation Crypto Assets" proposal, still in its comment period.

The Chatter

Willy Woo (X, Sep 6): argues bitcoin's divergence from equities is now the widest in nearly a decade, comparing the setup to 2015 — when BTC ran independently of a choppy stock market ahead of the 2017 bull run — and reads it as bitcoin liquidity strengthening while equity fragility builds; other analysts using different lookback windows dispute the decoupling is real, so treat the read as contested. Otherwise a quiet day for standout arguments — the desks and fintwit were largely consumed by the same Fed/Iran macro read already covered above; worth checking back once CPI-week positioning notes start landing.
